Fly Fishing for Atlantic Salmon on
Newfoundland's #1 Wilderness River!

The World Needs More CANADA

Grey River Lodge
Ours is a total wilderness experience, where guests access modern remotely located lodges via an exhilarating helicopter trip over an unspoiled picturesque landscape. Imagine, the nearest community is 14 miles away and is itself isolated, with no roads and outside access by boat and helicopter only. The closest road of any kind is 25 minutes away by helicopter @ 120 MPH.

Our two lodges on the Grey River system provide some of the finest flyfishing for Atlantic Salmon available anywhere. Their tremendously remote locations have helped to maintain healthy stocks of wild sea-run salmon, even in these times when runs worldwide are in a state of uncertainty. The luxury type lodges and the peaceful atmosphere created by this remoteness serves to further enhance the high quality experience we provide.

Salmon fishing season on the Grey runs from mid-June to late August, with our peak period usually lasting from opening day through to late July. Most of our fish are grilse in the four to six pound range, but numbers of larger eight to twelve pound salmon have been increasing slowly but steadily since the closure of commercial salmon fishing off our coasts.

Over the six years of our operation, guests of Grey River Lodge, including many novice anglers, have achieved very high standards of angling success while pursuing the very elusive Atlantic Salmon. These bright and vibrant fighters are bound to thrill even the most seasoned flyfisher. Some of the best action is available adjacent to the lodge, but for those who are more adventurous and interested in hiking, an unlimited number of excellent pools (many of them as yet unnamed) await either up or down stream. Angling can be done by wading or simply standing on the rocky shoreline. While regular flyfishing equipment and the standard salmon flies are recommended, it is the action on dry flies which has most excited anglers at Grey river. With the very low fishing pressure and the large number of quality pools available, a very relaxed and free fishing timetable exists. Little wonder our percentage of repeat clients is extremely high.

Grey River Lodge boasts two modern lodges, The Forks and Salmon Brook, seven miles apart on this spectacular river system. They are almost identical, both being very spacious cedar log structures, each with two full bathrooms, as well as five double occupancy bedrooms. Full-time cooks are on staff armed with fully equipped kitchens, who have earned the reputation of not merely just satisfying the appetites of our guests, but tend to give them another reason to return. Despite the remoteness, both lodges offer hot and cold running water, generated electricity with back-up generators, deep freezers, mobile or satellite telephone communications and separate guide quarters. All bedding, pillows and bath towels are also provided. Very generous interior lounge areas and exterior decking afford all guests ample opportunity to relax and absorb the tremendous atmosphere present at the lodges.

Following the breathtaking 30-60 minute helicopter ride to the lodge of choice, all are in full appreciation of this pristine environment as the aircraft lifts off, leaving you in this paradise amid the wilderness.

Healthy populations of moose, woodland caribou, black bear, bald eagles, ptarmigan, artic hare, fox, as well as many others inhabit this terrain. The traveller is afforded excellent opportunity for sightings of these creatures during the helicopter journey, while hiking near the lodge, or even right from the lodge itself.

We are committed to providing the highest quality of flyfishing for all our clients, and this is now taken for granted by most who are familiar with our operation.

The standard trip is for five nights at the lodge with parts of six days fishing. It is possible to customize our packages to an individuals requests, but an early booking will help make this possible. NF is accessible by commercial airlines from all major air terminals, with our most convenient air terminal being Deer Lake. It is also possible to drive to NF, with connection to mainland North America by very large auto carrying ferries from North Sydney, Nova Scotia. Lodge access is via helicopter directly to the lodge from the airport at Deer Lake, NF, as shown on the map.

Our top notch salmon fishing is unquestionable. Some say the spectacular locations of our lodges is what sets us apart from others. But the most frequent compliment from our guests is regarding our tremendous staff of guides and cooks and their willingness to do almost anything to ensure total guest satisfaction.

Come fish with us soon at Grey River Lodge.
