Materials You'll Need to Tie 'Step 1' Flies

  • Threads: 8/0 Uni-thread, or equiv.; black, tan, or brown; olive or yellow.
  • Hooks: Standard wet fly; 1XL or 2XL, wet fly; standard dry fly; 4XL nymph/streamer.
  • Body Materials: Peacock herl; Hare's Ear dubbing; very fine dry-fly grade dubbing for PMD (pale greenish yellow); olive chenille; fine lead wire; medium lead wire.
  • wing & Wing Case Materials: Gray hen tippets; very thin dark gray or brown Bugskin or sprayed feather (H-E Nymph).
  • Ribbing: Fine oval gold tinsel.
  • Hackle: Grizzly hen neck hackle; hungarian partridge; light gray dry-fly grade soft grizzly rooster saddle.
