WAPOOS SIBI

Fish & Game Club

Wapoos Sibi Fish and Game Club: Territory and Access

Established in 1917, Wapoos Sibi is one of Canada's oldest fishing and hunting clubs. Located in the heart of Northern Quebec, it is easily accessible by car or truck, just 5 hours north of Montreal, and 4 hours from Ottawa (map). Float planes can easily dock on our sandy beach in front of our Main Lodge on Lac Long. As a licensed outfitter, we have exclusive fishing and hunting rights to our 65 square miles of territory. Imagine 35 sparkling lakes you can drink from, all inter-connected by rivers and streams that are all alive with game fish!

Nature and Wildlife Lovers

Wapoos Sibi is far more than just another Fish & Game Club. As Laurentian Shield country, it is the ideal place to come and forget about the rat race. Gentle country breezes rippling through your hair, fresh air, clear, peaceful lakes, spectacular sunsets and the melody of countless varieties of birds will all help you find the real you.

Bring your camera and capture the natural beauty and grace of fox, raccoons, curious squirrels and porcupines. Or, if you prefer, take a hike through our endless trails and when the going gets rough, slip into something cool and comfortable; one of our crystal clear lakes. And if you fancy a quick snack, there are giant wild blueberries as far as the eye can see. You owe it to yourself to discover your very own Shangrila... far from the mad, mad, mad world. This place is called Wapoos Sibi.

Superb Angling

Whether you enjoy spin-casting, fly-fishing or just like bouncing a worm off the bottom, Wapoos Sibi has it all! Our lakes and rivers contain only natural wild fish as we feel that stocking hatchery fish weakens the strain. Almost all of our 35 lakes are accessible by truck (and many by car) over maintained logging roads. If you have the time and energy, we have several lakes that require a short hike. These lakes probably haven't been fished in several years, and are teeming with speckled trout!

Speckled Trout

Speckled trout of up to 7 lbs. have been caught at Wapoos, but a realistic average would be 2 - 4 pounds. Lake Trout of up to 42 lbs. have been taken and 15 - 20 pounders are not uncommon. Walleye (Pickerel) fishing is superb with many caught in the 10 - 14 lb. class. And our Northern Pike Lake has produced tackle busters up to 25 lbs. with many 30 and 40 pounders hooked and lost! Bring your"fish finder"; you'll be amazed at the quantity and size of the fish that swim in our lakes!

Lake Trout

These massive beauties can grow to 42 pounds at Wapoos Sibi, Some have been caught on the Fly, or deep trolling with downriggers. Using the natural bait fish of the area, the Chub minnow can also be very effective, as well as crank baits, spinners and spoons.

Walleye (Pickerel)

Several of our lakes, and some fast water is where you will find some very serious Walleye, that can go fifteen pounds and more! This jade green and yellow beauty will not only give you quite a battle, but, if you win, the great joy is in the eating! I doubt very much if there is a fish anywhere that tastes as good as fresh Walleye!

Great Northern Pike

This "heavy hitter" can be caught on almost anything from spoons, crank baits and even bucktails on a fly rod, The first several runs are very exiting, since these fish can grow to 45 pounds at Wapoos Sibi. Bring wire leaders and heavier tackle for these beauties!

Hunting Heaven

Wapoos Sibi is Moose and Bear country. Moose up to 1,400 lbs and Black Bears of up to 500 lbs. have been taken. Our hunters enjoy a high average kill rate because of our policy of"Zone Hunting". Each group of hunters has a reserved territory of 10 - 12 square miles which is their EXCLUSIVE zone.

Also, a large"Conservation Zone" in the heart of the territory is never hunted and is left undisturbed to allow game to propagate. For Bird Hunters, we offer Ruffed and Spruce Grouse as well as Canada Geese.

The Seasons At Wapoos Sibi

Ice is usually out the first few days of May, Mid May to mid-June is the time for Speckled Trout and serious Lake Trout. As the water warms up, usually beginning June, the Walleye and Pike become active and begin feeding after a long winter.

We still enjoy superb fishing in late June and July, as the water still remains quite cold, with all species still feeding well in early morning and evening. Deeper trolling during the day is very effective.

August is a wonderful month, and our most experienced veteran Angler's favourite. Sunny and shorter days and cool nights trigger the feeding of all species, and the fishing really heats up! September can get quite cold, but this is the time for trophy Walleye that are always close to shore chasing minnows all day, every day!

Hunting is from mid-September to mid-October when the hills turn golden, and the sounds of Bull Moose reverberate through the hills and valleys. The lakes begin freezing at the edges and light snow is not unusual. The Bear Hunt takes place in early Spring, usually midMay to end of June.
